Where Can Juniors Play?
(in alphabetical order)
Unfortunately, many courses in the Grundy, Kendal, Will county area are not designed for juniors under 14. Some courses have adjusted for this by adding forward tee boxes or marker flags. Others have a more relaxed and open attitude towards juniors. Below is a list of the best places I golfed with my kids (within 60 minutes from Morris IL). If you know of others, please let me know.
Cantigney Youth Course (Wheaton)
This course is about 50 minutes away from Morris but it is worth the drive. The course is essentially a small country club for juniors. The holes are short but challenging . At the club house they like to address the junior first then the adult. They encourage juniors to make their own tee times. All the clothing shoes and clubs are designed for the junior golfer. Adults are only allowed on the course if they are accompanying a junior golfer.
Cogg Hill Family Night (Lemont)
Yes the Cogg Hill!! The place where Tiger Woods played! Family night is on Saturday and Sunday with tee times starting as early as 5pm. For only $10 per player with a cart, you can enjoy one of the nicest courses in Illinois. The tees are moved forward. You have your choice of playing from the gold tees (around 200 yards) or the blue tees (around 100 yards). Overall its a great experience.
Blackberry Oaks
If you take lessons at this course, juniors golf for free after 5 with a paying adult.
Heritage Bluffs (Channahon)
Only a few young golfers but all golfers under 16 are free with a paid adult (see web page for details). This is a good practice facility with $5 junior buckets and other quality practice areas.
Dwight Country Club
Dwight Country Club offers junior memberships. This is a very economical way to go if you want play a lot of golf at a reasonable price.
The Sanctuary (New Lenox)
This is a tough course but the adults are not allowed from 6am - 4 pm on Tuesdays. It costs $20 to join their juniors league and $10 to golf every Tuesday you show up. When you get there, the starter puts the junior into a group and they go for as many holes as they want. Adults are not allowed on the course (even as spectators) but they have had a very good safety record. The kids I met really enjoy the league.
White Mountain (Orland Park)
This is a great par 3/4 course. Most holes are 125-150 yards. The terrain is very flat and forgiving. The course has many junior and new golfers so everyone is pretty laid back. They have a good program where you can take a one hour lesson and play 9 holes with others from the lesson. Coaches are on hand to help juniors through their round.
Zigfield Troy (Darien)
This course is a drive (45 min fro Morris) but it is a great par 3 course with excellent conditions for junior golfers. Every time I have been there it was rare to see groups without kids. I have seen kids as young as 5 there playing best ball with their dad. It's a nice flat fun course.
